How to Choose a Preschool in Minot, ND

Choosing a preschool is about more than checking a box before kindergarten — it's about finding a place where your child feels safe, seen, and genuinely excited to learn. If you're looking at preschool in Minot, ND, a little homework up front makes all the difference. Here's how to find the right fit.
Start with the basics
Look for a center that's licensed and follows North Dakota's health and safety requirements. Ask about teacher-to-child ratios, how teachers are trained, and whether staff are background-checked and CPR & First Aid certified. A quality preschool will happily walk you through all of it.
Ask about the learning approach
The best preschools teach through play — kids pick up letters, numbers, and colors through songs, building, art, and pretend, not worksheets and drills. Ask what a typical day looks like. You want structure *and* room to explore. (Here's a day in our preschool rooms if you'd like an example.)
Look for kindergarten readiness
By age four, your child should be building the skills that matter for kindergarten — name-writing, early phonics, counting, following a routine, and the confidence to raise a hand and try. Ask how the preschool prepares children for that first day of school.
Visit in person — and trust your gut
Photos only tell part of the story. Tour during a normal day so you can see how teachers interact with the children. Are the kids engaged and content? Is the space clean and bright? Do teachers get down on the children's level? The feeling you get on a tour matters more than any brochure.
Questions worth asking
Bring a short list to every tour: What's the teacher-to-child ratio, and how experienced are the teachers? Is it a full-day program, or will I need before- and after-care? Do you accept CCAP? What's your approach to comfort, discipline, and daily communication? And is there a waitlist, or are spots open now?
